If you’re an educator or thinking about becoming one, you’re likely familiar with the concept of social-emotional learning (SEL).
According to CASEL, modeling and teaching SEL helps young people and adults “develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”
CASEL’s research shows that modeling and teaching the 5 pillars of SEL (Self-Management, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making) in the classroom will help create equitable, successful, and thriving communities for students, parents, community collaborators, and teachers alike. What could be better than that?!
My students benefit from having CASEL’s 5 pillars of SEL displayed in the classroom. I created these posters with Canva, and will refer to them from time to time throughout the school year. I must admit, parents seem to enjoy them too. During one back-to-school night, a student’s father wandered over to this section of my wall, and gave me a compliment for teaching students such important life skills. I couldn’t agree more!
If you’re interested in implementing SEL, CASEL even offers a FREE online course, which you can find here. From this course, I learned valuable ideas for how to integrate SEL into my everyday lesson plans. My students have definitely benefited from my boosted knowledge.
