This 10x3 activity can be modified for any grade level and any subject. For example, in my session, I wanted my history students to know how specific inventions affected different groups in society. You can change the question to include anything else you want your students to know.
Goal: Students will learn about 6 main inventions from the American Market Revolution period in a fun, layered, interactive activity.
How it works:
Students start in groups. I give them each a note card with one of the 6 inventions (Telegraph, Steamship, Canal, Textile mill, Railroad, Cotton gin).
I use these Slides to lead my students through the process:
End of the lesson: Students go back to their groups, and I tell them they have 10 minutes to “Empty” everything they learned down on one shared piece of paper. They need to clearly label the invention and the specific group in society that was changed by the invention. When the time is up, I count the number of details each group wrote down, and the group with the highest amount wins!
The great thing about this activity is that it gets students up and moving while exchanging information with their peers. It also helps them practice both long-term and short-term memory. The competitive element also makes this activity more fun than reading or taking notes.
